SNL is pleased to say as “I told you so” with respect to the camera shots of a forlorn Coach Fulmer in the second and third quarter of yesterday’s game. That said SNL’s clairvoyance, which has been called upon for a number of reasons over the years, failed to predict that Florida would trounce the Vols with a gameplan borrowed from “The Bear” and a stingy and opportunistic defense.
Following yesterday’s win, even the most partisan Gator fan will concede that the 2008 Gators look more like the 1992 ‘Bama squad that won the national title than the offensive juggernaut that was anticipated. And, after watching LSU and Auburn last night, this unexpected turn of events may turn out for the best.
Despite the lopsided victories, there exists an almost indiscernible (but viable) amount of concern at this point amongst Gator fans. For starters, the defense is very good but seems to lack the necessary ingredients to be dominant-namely “natural” defensive tackles (if you watched LSU and Auburn last night, you know this to be true). In addition, the offense has been somewhat inconsistent, though improved, and has had the luxury of playing with a lead in every contest. Sooner or later, the offense will be called upon to outscore somebody, most likely LSU, whose playmakers on offense are much better than given credit for, and whose defense is seriously, seriously, imposing.
In an event, SNL will get another look at the game film tonight and expound on this game and its likely impact on the Gators’ future, which remains bright, but is not without some legitimate danger as well.
